Lauro’s view of the Tre Fontane monastic complex outside Rome: the basilica of SS. Vincenzo e Anastasio with its portico and campanile; the small octagonal church of Santa Maria Scala Coeli at right; the oratory of the Tre Fonti upper right; and S. Maria Annunciata at upper left. Figures animate the forecourt. A long Latin note along the bottom recounts the abbey’s history and indulgences.

The Church of SS. Vincent and Anastasius stands at the Three Fountains near the newer church of the Annunciation.
Pope Leo III restored it; it was long celebrated for the cult of St. Anastasius Martyr.
Later the site passed to the Cistercians; Pope Eugene III, himself a Cistercian and disciple of St. Bernard, had been abbot here.
Pilgrims especially visit Scala Coeli (“Stairway of Heaven”), where—according to pious tradition—angels free souls from purgatory by the merits of Masses said there.
