Transform your living space with this stunning matte canvas print of the "Colvmna Miliaria in Foro Roman" by Giacomo Lauro.

Artist/Publisher: Giacomo Lauro (Roman printmaker/publisher, active early 17th c.)

Series: Antiquae Urbis Splendor (Rome, first issued 1612; later printings throughout the 17th century)

Medium: Copperplate engraving with later hand-color

Subject: The Milliarium Aureum (“Golden Milestone”) set up by Augustus in the Roman Forum ca. 20 BCE—the symbolic point from which distances on Rome’s road network were reckoned.

Design: Lauro centers the reconstructed milestone on a pedestal inscribed “Roma,” flanked by costumed figures labeled as peoples of the world (e.g., Turca, Persa, Lapponis, Danu, Sina, Tartari, Arabus, Anglus, Moschus; below: Germanus, Gallus, Hispanus, Polonus, and a Romanus senator). The long Latin caption explains the column’s significance as the measure of all roads leading to Rome and exalts the city’s centrality.

Context: This plate typifies Lauro’s project: antiquarian reconstructions of ancient Roman monuments accompanied by didactic text and ethnographic “types,” underscoring Rome’s claim as caput mundi.

This beautiful piece of history would make a great gift for anyone with a love of the past and Rome.
