Thomas Fuller — Tribes of Judah & Simeon with the Dead Sea (from The Pisgah-Sight of Palestine) — hand-colored copperplate engraving, London, 1650s
A richly decorative 17th-century map of southern Palestine/Israel showing the Tribes of Judah and Simeon and the Dead Sea dramatically labeled “Mare Mortuum / Mare Salsum / Lacus Asphaltitis.” Cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim appear in flames along the water, a striking Baroque device that collectors love. The plate is embellished with armorial cartouches, place-name banners, and a putto with dividers at the scale.
Engraved by John Goddard for Thomas Fuller’s celebrated work The Pisgah-Sight of Palestine (London, first issued 1650; later 1650s impressions). Fuller—a noted English clergyman and historian—produced one of the most engaging English-published suites of biblical maps; this sheet is among the best known for its drama and detail.
